Lancaster University

Overview

Communications Management was appointed by Lancaster University to deliver a media relations campaign in June 2011 around the visit of the University's Chancellor, Sir Chris Bonington CBE,  to GD Goenka World Institute of Higher Education.

Sir Chris's visit marked the expansion of the partnership between Lancaster University and GD Goenka World Institute of Higher Education to include three new engineering degrees. As part of the event, the first students to graduate with a Lancaster University degree were presented to Sir Chris
at a public lecture and graduation dinner.

Strategy

The campaign sought to maximise the on-the-ground PR opportunities created by the visit of Sir Chris, a renowned mountaineer, by arranging for the media to attend the event (with a press release issued to media unable to attend). We worked with Lancaster's PR team and internationally in partnership with contacts at Goenka, to manage the campaign.

Results

The campaign received substantial media coverage in India including:

  • 4 journalists attended the event with Sir Chris Bonington - Mail Today, Education Times (The Times of India), The Financial Express, and Education World (leading trade magazine).
  • 27 pieces of media coverage generated for the visit.
  • 2 in-depth feature profiles of Sir Chris Bonington published - in The Times of India and Mail Today.
  •  All 27 articles generated in India were about Lancaster University only and 100% coverage wias positive.

The success of this project led to Communications Management being commissioned to provide media support for the graduation ceremony in Delhi in February 2012.
