On the 5th November 2009 120 journalists, PR professionals and senior representatives from the education and skills sector gathered at the House of Commons for the fifth Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) ‘Education Journalist of the Year Awards’. The event celebrates the best in education and skills reporting over the previous 12 months and Communications Management has sponsored one of the awards. The celebratory occasion has become a recognised way for those practising PR in the education and skills sector to salute their colleagues in the media.
This year Communications Management jointly sponsored the Ted Wragg Award, which recognises journalists’ long term contributions to education journalism. Freelance journalist and author Francis Beckett scooped the award, joining a small, but elite, group of previous winners including Donald MacLeod of the Guardian, Mike Baker of the BBC, Richard Garner and Lucy Hodges of the Independent.
Justin Shaw, Director, Education Practice at Communications Management said: “Francis Beckett is a worthy winner of this award – following many years of dedication to education journalism. His work is always incisive and interesting and he deserves this high level of recognition for his outstanding talent.”
Other award winners included features writer Matthew Reisz, who picked up the ‘National Education Journalist of the Year’ award. The ‘Times Higher Education’ runners up were Dorothy Lepkowska, freelance education journalist; James Westhead, former BBC education correspondent; and Liz Lightfoot, freelance writer for the Observer. The ‘Regional Education Journalist of the Year’ winner was Maggie Taggart, education correspondent at BBC Northern Ireland, while the runner up title went to Linda Tanner, education correspondent at Bristol Evening Post.
