About Communications Management
We were the first PR company to focus on education clients – with Ashridge Management College and West Herts College among our first clients. Over our 30 years we’ve worked with more than 250 universities, colleges, schools and others – including the universities of Cambridge, London and Warwick, Henley Business School, the Royal Veterinary College, GEMS international schools, ALT academy group, Santander Universities, BT Better World schools campaign, The Prince’s Trust Xl Clubs, Seetec, LAMDA and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s education wing. Internationally we’ve supported clients in the USA, Canada, Italy, Spain and Belgium – and we have a network of 30 fellow education PR agencies.
Our clients tell us they value our depth of experience, our contacts, our ideas and innovation. We’re trusted advisors with strong creative energy. We’re always innovating and we are forging new markets in commercial-sales-to education, sports education, prisons education, arts education and work-based learning/apprenticeships. We believe in the power of education as the most powerful force for social and economic improvement and we have a team that’s immersed in education through their prior backgrounds.
Founded in 1987 – we’re now 30 years old and proud of our roots ! Our founder, Pam Calvert, started us off in the back bedroom of her St Albans home – with the idea of creating a distinctive and particular type of PR consultancy: hot on service, in love with the subject matter and driven to succeed for our clients. Among our first ever clients were Ashridge Management College, West Herts College of Further Education, Friern Barnet School and BlessingWhite (employee engagement and workforce performance specialists) – so education and personal development has always been in our roots.
With the recruitment of Justin Shaw from the University of Hertfordshire’s PR operation in 1994, the company set out to focus more deliberately on higher education, further education, schools, skills, and other areas of education. Justin was a founder member of the Education & Skills Sectoral Group of the Chartered Institute of PR (serving on their committee for eight years and creating the annual Education Journalist Awards – for which he was recognised with a CIPR Fellowship). Pam and Justin are co-owners and have recruited star performers from different backgrounds to support our clients – and many drawn from previous in-house lives in education and skills settings as well as journalism. We’re always innovating and branching out into new areas of education by attracting new talent with niche expertise to take us to new markets.
While we’re still based in Hertfordshire, we’re working with clients around the UK and in different parts of the world. We frequently ‘give back‘ to the education sector – through donations, sponsorships, commissioning academic research and serving as governors or advisers on education boards. We also believe in celebrating successes and having fun: with anniversary celebrations so far being held in Paris, Majorca and Nice….who knows where our 30th year will take us!
“We worked with the Communications Management team over three years to help build our profile as one of the UK’s most significant independent higher education institutions. They delivered a flow of media coverage that helped build recognition for our areas of academic expertise and provided high level advice to guide our positioning in the HE sector. I am happy recommend their work and professional practice.”Angie Milan
